Impenetrable Mirror

The final project is about the process of discovering people’s relationship with mirror. By developing my ideas, I took photos of human face and body parts in mirrors with different angles and fragmented reflections. With experimenting materials, I chose that copper wire and stainless steel for my final materials as they are able to twist and make my samples more capable to be observe in three dimensional way. The final outcomes involve 6 pieces of weaving samples. They express the process of one’s inner world active by outside world through mirror, as the chaos as he cannot connect himself with the mirror, to the ravishment of his perception of ‘I am the person in the mirror’, to the finally, the mirror is more important than himself. Without demonise mirrors, I simply want to make people to remember the fragmented self is the same person in the mirror, however people act differently when someone else is watching.

Material wise, I gave up on the original idea of using solvron, pemotex, and shrinking yarn as the yarns did not work as good as my imagination. However, with paper and cotton chenille, they work better with the print on the warp as the weft face structure covers the reflective yarns and creates a pattern with flash light. Without any dyeing process, the combination copper wire and stainless steel work better with weft face and warp face weaving structures, it also shows clearly my concept of fragmentation of body with foldable outcomes.

By print on the warp, I try to express the hidden self- perception and chaos of one’s inside when he cannot connect himself from the mirror. With the reflective yarn, I try to reveal the ravishment of one when he discover the connection between himself and the mirror.
